Ebola virus: Obama says it is too early to send experimental drug to Africa as WHO considers if outbreak is 'global health emergency'

The experimental drug Zmapp has been used to treat two US aid

Barack Obama has said it is too soon to send an experimental drug used to treat the deadly Ebola virus to West Africa, as experts meet to decide whether the outbreak warrants declaring a global health emergency.

Two US aid workers striken by the virus were administered ZMapp in Liberia ahead of their evacuation to America for treatment. Their condition appears to be improving, but it is unclear if the drug is directly responsible.ZMapp is a drug made from antibodies produced in a lab that has never gone through human trials or been approved by the US’s FDA Food and Drug Administration. Producing ZMapp is also slow process as antibodies have to be produced on specially modified tobacco leaves. The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) latest figures show 932 deaths across four countries have been blamed on the illness, with 1,711 reported cases. In Saudi Arabia, a man suspected of contracting Ebola during a recent business trip to Sierra Leone also died early on Wednesday in Jeddah, the Health Ministry announced. Speaking at a news conference at the end of an African summit, the US President said he lacked enough information to give the green light on distributing the experimental treatment, insisting the world must "let the science guide us"."I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful,” said Mr Obama.

"The Ebola virus both currently and in the past is controllable if you have a strong public health infrastructure in place."He added: "We're focusing on the public health approach right now, but I will continue to seek information about what we're learning about these drugs going forward."Mr Obama’s remarks came as the WHO convened a two-day meeting in Geneva to determine whether the epidemic constitutes a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" and to consider steps to help overstretched emergency organisations. They will also ask medical experts to explore the use of experimental treatments for Ebola next week.Meanwhile, in an effort to contain the spread of the virus, Liberia deployed the army to implement controls and isolate severely affected communities, in an operation code-named "White Shield". An electron micrograph of the Ebola virusThe Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf also declared a state of emergency in the country, warning that Liberia needs "extraordinary measures for the very survival of our state and for the protection of the lives of our people".Many hospitals and clinics have been forced to close across Liberia, often because health workers are afraid of contracting the virus or because of abuse by locals who think the disease is a government conspiracy."Ignorance and poverty, as well as entrenched religious and cultural practices, continue to exacerbate the spread of the disease," President Sirleaf said in an interview

Nigeria’s Health Minister has said Ebola is now a national emergency after five more cases were confirmed in the country on Wednesday and a second person died of the disease. Some major airlines, such as British Airways and Emirates, have halted flights to affected countries, while many expatriates are leaving, according to officials.
Ebola, a highly contagious haemorrhagic fever, kills more than half of the people who contract it. Victims suffer from fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and internal and external bleeding.

The Gaza crisis, over 600 killed in military ops

Israel kept up attacks on Gaza on Tuesday, killing three Palestinians and hitting over 70 targets, including five mosques, a sports stadium and the home of the deceased Hamas military chief. The latest casualties in the fortnight-long violence have brought the Palestinian death toll to 633, reports AP, citing health officials. The majority of the victims are civilians, including almost 100 children.Additionally, nearly 500 homes have been destroyed in the Israeli bombardments and 100,000 people have been displaced, said Jens Laerke, spokesman of the UN Office for Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) at a Geneva news briefing.A United Nations school which is helping to shelter displaced Palestinians in the center of Gaza also came under attack from Israeli fire as a team was inspecting damage from the day before, a UN official said. The official mentioned that a team, who had been given permission by Israel to enter, were at the school, which is run by the UN in Al-Maghazi, when Israeli tanks resumed their shelling and hit the building. On Monday, a hospital was hit in Gaza, with four people killed and scores of others wounded in the attack. Thirty of the wounded were medics, according to Sky News. The International Committee of the Red Cross issued a statement condemning the shelling "in the strongest terms," Reuters reports. The organization stated that the hospital came under fire at least four times, with life-saving equipment severely damaged.About 2,000 rockets have been launched over the past fortnight, Israeli military says. The country has also been destroying tunnels that Hamas reportedly constructed from Gaza into Israel to carry out attacks.Palestinian boys walk past debris, including Korans and other items from a mosque destroyed in an overnight Israeli military strike, on July 22, 2014, in Rafah the southern Gaza Strip. (AFP Photo / Said Khatib)Israeli military accuses Hamas militants of firing rockets from the grounds of Gaza hospitals and seeking refuge there. All in all, Israel has lost 29 people – two of them civilians, with two soldiers killed on Tuesday, as stated by the country’s militia. This death toll is the highest number of Israeli military deaths since the 2006 Lebanon war.Violence is raging on the West Bank as well. Medics told Reuters that soldiers shot a Palestinian man dead after cracking down on stone-throwing protesters.Tel Aviv stated that a Palestinian shot at a car and seriously wounded an Israeli in the Nablus area. This comes as US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Cairo on Monday for talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss the region’s plight. The US is set to give $47 million in humanitarian aid for Gaza, Kerry said.A Palestinian man removes goods from the rubble of a destroyed store located on the ground floor of a building hit by an Israeli air strike on July 22, 2014 in Gaza city. (AFP Photo / Mahmud Hams)The US is "deeply concerned about the consequences of Israel's appropriate and legitimate effort to defend itself,"Kerry said."But always, in any kind of conflict, there is a concern about civilians - about children, women, communities that are caught in it," Kerry added, as quoted by Reuters.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is to fly to Israel on Tuesday for peace negotiations with the country’s premier Benjamin Netanyahu and to meet the Palestinian authorities.A day earlier, Ban Ki-moon condemned the killings as an"atrocious action," and called for an immediate end to the fighting, urging Israel to “exercise maximum restraint.”“Too many innocent people are dying (and) living in constant fear,” he said at news conference in Doha.Last week, Egypt suggested a roadmap for the ceasefire which Israel accepted, but Hamas rejected. The ceasefire plan stalled after Hamas requested that Israel and Egypt lift the blockade on the coastal region that has a population of 1.8 million people. Another demand was for Israel to free a few hundred Palestinian inmates detained after the murder of three Jewish teenagers last month, Reuters reported."The world must understand that Gaza has decided to end the blockade by its blood and its heroism," deputy Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said in a televised address on Monday.

Pdp reveals... How boko haram will help jonathan win 2015 election

*President Goodluck

JonathanSpeaking to newsmen in Abakaliki, the Youth leader hinted that if Boko Haram should continue their bloodbath and eventually last till 2015, it would be favourable to Jonathan because the Nigeria constitution would empower the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC not to contest election in troubled Northern states, therefore guaranteeing the president's return to power.Ogah alleged that the sect members where wasting innocent lives following an existing conspiracy aimed at stopping Jonathan's presidential ambition next year and reiterated that nobody can stop Jonathan from contesting in 2015 general polls. He urged Northern leaders and politicians to desist from disrupting the President's efforts at ending insecurity in the country, and called for more enhanced alliance between all the Northern leaders and security agencies deployed in troubled areas to curb the menace of the sect.

The youth leader lamented the brutal and senseless killing of innocent Nigerians as well as the destruction of properties worth billions of naira by the Islamist sect members."The more the Boko Haram insurgency remains, the more the constitution of Nigeria will not allow election to hold in that place and President Jonathan will continue to be the President of this country" Ogah said. "What are the governors of the North doing to end the insurgency?

"Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad is popularly known as Boko Haram which means "Western education is sin" in Hausa language. The terrorist group which has its strong hold in the northeastern part of the country, Cameroon and Niger, has carried out several attacks and bombings which have claimed thousands of innocent souls in their quest to Islamise the country and put an end to what they described as westernisation. The sect's onslaught, however, became very intense during the present administration, following the recent abduction of over 234 school girls from GGSS, Chibok, Borno State, as well as the brutal murder of the Emir of Gwoza in Borno State.

The sect's menace has however, attracted the attention of international communities like France, U.S, Britain, China, Israel among others, whom have all volunteered to help the Nigerian Government in putting an end to their activities as well as rescuing the remaining kidnapped school girls.

The sins of lamido

A statement from the presidency, which announced his suspension, had accused Governor Sanusi Lamido of "financial recklessness and misconduct, which are inconsistent with the administration's vision of a Central Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management, prudence, transparency and financial discipline.

"The statement adds: "Being also deeply concerned about far-reaching irregularities under Mallam Sanusi's watch, which have distracted the Central Bank away from the pursuit and achievement of its statutory mandate; and being determined to urgently reposition the Central Bank of Nigeria for greater efficiency, respect for due process and accountability, President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the immediate suspension of Sanusi."Talking about the alleged financial recklessness, the first that readily comes to mind was the donation of N100 million to the victims of Boko Haram attacks in Kano State in early 2012. Reports quoted Sanusi as saying that the donation was part of CBN's contribution to the state government to alleviate the suffering of direct victims of the violence and their families.Reacting to the development, then, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Mr. Ralph Ndigwe, demanded explanation from Sanusi on why CBN had not extended similar gestures to hundreds of Igbos who were victims of violent attacks by Boko Haram.Ndigwe threatened that Ohanaeze would champion the removal of Sanusi as CBN governor should he fail to explain the rationale behind the donation to Kano victims only."We want Sanusi to tell us what CBN has done for hundreds of Igbos, who were victims of Boko Haram violent attacks in various parts of the North. If Sanusi fails to give us explanation for CBN's selective donation of N100 million to victims of Kano attack, we will not hesitate to push for his removal from office as CBN governor," the Ohanaeze spokesman stated.

Capitalisation of rescued banksThe injection of hundreds of millions of naira into the rescued banks whose managing directors were removed by the apex bank shortly after Sanusi assumed duty as the CBN helmsman was another albatross on the man's neck. Critics described the action as unlawful as it was not approved by the National Assembly. But Sanusi anchored his actions on the CBN Act. This forced the National Assembly to attempt to amend the Act in order to subjugate the powers of CBN governor to the National Assembly.

Legislators' salariesAnother sin of the Kano prince was his allegation that more than 25 per cent of the nation's budget was expended on the legislators' salaries and allowances. This pitted him against the legislators, who later summoned him before a joint select committee of the Senate over his claim.Sanusi had, during a lecture at the Igbinedion University Okada, Edo State, in December 2010, alleged that the overheads consumed by the National Assembly was 25.41 per cent of the nation's budget. The senators had disputed this and put the figure at between 1 and 3.5 per cent.According to Senator Iyiola Omisore, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, who presided over the hearing, Sanusi's claim was "a deliberate attempt to mislead the nation."Waiving the budget document before the audience, the senator said the figure, which Sanusi quoted in his lecture as the Federal Government's overhead in that year's budget was false. The correct figure, the senator said, was N1.3 trillion. This, he said, meant that the National Assembly's overhead spending was N1.3 trillion, which translated to only 3.5 per cent of the Federal Government's overhead expenditure, a far cry from the CBN governor's 25 per cent.

Islamic BankingSanusi also found himself in the eye of the storm when he decided to license Islamic banking in 2011.This did not go down well with Christian bodies in the country. The President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, accused Sanusi of promoting Islamic banking with public funds, which he said, was beyond the CBN governor's constitutional limits. He also berated him for spreading the notion that non-interest banking was synonymous with the Islamic religion. He challenged the CBN governor to give account of funds spent on Islamic banking to Nigerians and return such money to public treasury. He also asked the CBN to announce uniform guidelines for licensing non-interest banking system, as it is done in the educational sector, so as to avoid discrimination in the nation's financial sector.A Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, later in June 2012 made a proclamation that any operation licence granted by the CBN to any Islamic commercial jurisprudence bank under non-interest financial services was "unlawful, illegal, ultra vires, null and void.

"N5,000 noteSanusi also incurred public wrath in 2011 when he decided to introduce N5,000 note under his currency restructuring exercise. Many Nigerians kicked against the plan, but following a barrage of public anger, disagreement and threats, the idea was set aside.Face-off with PresidentThe last straw that broke the camel's back was the alleged heated argument between him and President Goodluck Jonathan over the suspicion that he, Sanusi, leaked his letter to Jonathan to the ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo. In the said letter, the CBN governor was said to have accused the NNPC of not remitting $49.8 billion to the Federation Account. Sanusi, who denied leaking the letter to anyone, refused to resign and told the President during the heated telephone exchange, that he could only be removed by two-thirds of the Senate, as required by law. This was said to have infuriated the presidency.

Time for women to learn how to win us 4life

Even though we all know men do alot for love from acient achielles, romeo, samson in the bible even kamoru... They all died for sake of love women enjoy such sacrifices yet find it difficult to hold on to us for long.... As a nice decently concerened citizen here are few tips to help any needy sphinster hold on yo that man for life.

When it comes to figuring out the opposite sex sometimes it pays to go straight to the source. We got real men to answer the eternal question, "What the eff is he thinking?!" on matters of dating, relationships, sex and everything in between. Check out their awesome relationship advice for women.

1. "Just because I haven't texted you backimmediately does not mean I no longer like you-or want to break up with you. Sometimes we just have other things going on at the time, or we don't want to seem too overeager. Sometimes I'll text before I jump on a subway home and am stuck underground for an hour."

2. "It's really attractive when a girl takes initiative in bed; a guy won't think any less of you. It doesn't always need to be a tit for tat thing with giving and receiving. The norm of so many of my relationships has been doing 80 percent of the work and taking 80 percent of the initiative in the bedroom. I can't explain how refreshing it is when it feels like it's 50-50."

3. "Regardless of what you've heard, realize that guys can indeed be 'just friends' with other girls. Some women can get really jealous for no reason. Some think there's no such thing as a platonic relationship with another girl-either one or the other of you wants to hook up. It's important for them to know that those relationships can and do exist with the opposite sex. Don't drive yourself crazy over them."

4. "Sometimes we just need time to hang out with the boys. Just because you aren't invited out to the bar doesn't mean you have anything to be upset or jealous about. I usually find that time away from my girlfriend makes me appreciate the time we have together all that much more."

5. "Please take a compliment. It's frustrating when you give a girl a compliment and she disagrees. We weren't asking for your approval on our opinion, just telling you how great you look. Smile. Say thank you."

6. "Don't feel obligated to play down your strengths if you're good at something, like work or a special talent. We all like to see excellence and, even more so, be around it. If you're great at something and can speak about it with confidence, it makes other people want to be around you and can be a big turn on."

 7. "It's a turnoff for me when a girl pretends to like something just because I like it. 'You like the Knicks? Weird, I love the Knicks! Who's that tall one again?...Right, Tyson Chandler, he's good, huh?!' Who are you and what are your interests? If we disagree about stuff, let's have fun disagreeing about it and if any of it winds up being too important, then, well, it won't work out and that's fine. But I feel like there's a fine line between swapping interests with each other and coming off as clingy and without passions of your own, which eventually eats a hole through a relationship."

 8. "It's great when a girl shows affection to when it's the two of you, or shows she cares in a different way, like doing something nice, completely unsolicited. An independent woman is really attractive."

 9. "Don't be shy about suggesting dates that interest you. Guys are just as tired of going out to dinner over and over again as women are. A woman who suggests awesome date activities is one a guy can really appreciate, and it's nice to have something else to talk about other than yourselves and the food." . Don't be afraid to throw him a compliment.

10. "When it comes to sex, mix it up. Whatever your guy does to you, he had to learn it somewhere. It usually means he likes it too, so take a hint from the places he touches you and try them right back on him."

 11. "If you want to do something nice for a guy, do it, but don't always expect something in return. Don't assume your guy will always reciprocate and proceed to get mad when he doesn't."

12. "Communication about sex is really important. Your guy wants sex to be great for the both of you, and it's very helpful to talk about things (what works for you, what doesn't). Having a sense of humor about it can also make it easier and more fruitful. But be gentle with his ego. Make sure to be constructive and instructive."

13. "When you complain to a guy about something, know that he's probably thinking about how to fix that problem. Men don't complain just to vent-we're also looking for a solution. If all you want is for us to listen, be sure to tell us beforehand so you don't get frustrated when we try to solve things."

14. "Don't talk about your exes, why you're single, or your insecurities unless the guy brings them up."

 15. "Throw us a bone. We all know that men oftentimes think they know more about something than they really may. It's in our chemical makeup. Sometimes you just have to let us set the tent up wrong when camping or take three hours to change your oil-for a lot of us, it's how we both try to impress you and show you we care. Sometimes you've got to let a guy be a guy-even if we're goofing up.

16. "Not all guys are outright about their interest, but there are certain signs you can definitely look for. If you've developed an inside joke, that's for sure a good thing. How polite is he being? Is he buying drinks? Offering his seat? Walking you home/to the train? Is he staying out way later than he should? Generally trying to make sure you're enjoying yourself? Is it super easy to convince him to get one more round when he has to wake up for work at seven? He might be miserable the next day...but he probably won't mind."

17. "Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I love to see a woman dressed up. Plenty of women can get away with wearing anything, but I've always appreciated women that play up their differences. It's sexy."

18. "One hard fact people have to come to terms with is that you and your significant other aren't the last people you'll ever both be attracted to. To keep things as great as can be, you need to be innovative and open in your bedroomapproach. Let this step the sex game up a few notches or allow for broader possibilities beneath the sheets. Communication and an open mind are a necessity when it comes to sex."

19. "Little gestures go a long way. Sometimes when we reach a red light, my girlfriend will tug on my arm to get me to turn, then get on her toes and pull me in for a kiss. It's random and natural. No one's forcing her to do it-it just lets me know that she likes me. It's a really nice, unprompted way to be reminded that she cares."  Men love assertive women.

20. "Please eat food at restaurants! Eating like a bird is really off-putting- especially if we're dropping a fair amount of money. Going out to eat means going out to eat. Like drinking alone, no one wants to eat alone. It's a social thing. It's also hard not to read into that analogy that a girl stingy about food will be stingy about...

 21. "Don't underestimate the power of a compliment. A few kind words that show us you're into us go a long way. If we're in the beginning stages of getting to know you, it makes us feel much more at ease-a subtle way of giving us the green light. Look him in the eyes. Smile. Make it nice." -Zach D. 22. "If you've been in a relationship with someone over six months and you don't trust them, get out of that relationship. Simple as that.

23. "Say exactly what you mean. Men can't read your mind. If you know what you want, be upfront rather than expecting us to read between the lines and getting disappointed later. It's frustrating when women get mad at us about that! "

 24. "Be more assertive if you're interested in a guy. Sometimes reading signals from women feels a bit like reading brail if you're not blind. There are a lot of ways a girl can show she's interested without going overboard, like a subtle touch or giving a little extra attention at a party. If a guy knows you're interested there's a big chance he'll become interested too."

25. "Don't get me wrong-confidence is sexy, and insecurity is certainly a turnoff, but so is a chick that constantly talks about how pretty she is or how much attention she gets from guys. Sometimes overconfidence can work against you."

This simply means that your phone is constantly emitting radiation all the time when you on it? So what do you think about it?Studies have shown that if you keep your cell phone close to you for a period of very long time, it will cause headache, muscle pain, or cancer if it is serious. It is not a guaranteed that you will get these illnesses if you do that. However, it greatly increases the probability of getting it. The "under the pillow" angle of cell phone radiation is just a subset of a larger discussion on the topic of cell phone radiation in general.Though there is some evidence to support harmful effects of cell phone use on the brain, the jury is out on brain cancer or brain tumors and cell phone use. Studies have not shown a consistent link between cell phone proximity and cancer, however there has been some suggestion of a link between cell phones and brain and central nervous system tumors.Under your pillow is probably not the best place to keep your cell phone while you are sleeping. Get a cheap digital alarm clock at the dollar store and put it on your nightstand.Children are especially vulnerable to radiation, the report recommends that parents not allow their children under the age of 10 to use mobile phones except in emergencies, or to sleep with cellular phones under their pillows. It recommends using corded land lines whenever possible, and using cellular phones mostly as answering machines, turning them on only to check messages and return calls. Use of cell phones inside buildings or in cars increases cancer risk, as it increases the radiation a phone must emit to function. Use of text messages and non-wireless headsets can reduce cancer risk. The report also advises against carrying cell phones against the body, even in pockets.*Ways to Reduce Cell Phone Radiation.*Using speaker instead of talking directly into the handset.*Text instead of talking.*Use headphones or Bluetooth connectors.*If you are using your phone at night for its clock or alarm features, consider putting it in "airplane mode" which*suspends the phone's transmission functions.*Keep it a several feet away while you sleep.

This sweet febuary

Its the love season... A moment to share a time to beget and for the less privileged its a time of expectation.
This moment that threw me back to memory lane when mean were boys and ladies were girls...
When i played voltron with peers or called my self robin hood, if you actually watchee things fall apart in black and white television perharps you will be called okonkwo or those scary moment when you get frightened by the mention of willywilly...
Moment girls played ten ten, or build secret sand houses... Acting as racheal in secret of the sand or playing roles in the riche also cry.
I passionately remeber always acting daddy in our lilttle family drama before football stole away some moments. With all this thought now lets bring our mind back into this 2014...
All that could ever tie us together is profound love for each other without expectation of a return... Unconditional loving! But always remember It’s terrible to lose someone we love. But it’s even worse to lose ourselves while loving them" so dont love with obsession or it turns war!!!

Excerpts...
"Why do you think some artistes come come up with hit songs and find it difficult to maintain it?"
"Music is very expensive. Most of them make money and its had to put it back in the same thing. Your next money is not guaranteed because there are lots of artistes. If you say you wouldn't do show A, they can take artiste B for that show. It doesn't mean that because you have a hit song, you would be performing at all shows. It doesn't work like that. So, some of these guys, its hard for them. Its hard for them to follow up. Follow up is the hardest thing to do. Many artistes make a hit but the money they make from that hit is not even enough for them to support or sponsor the next video. So don't blame them'.
So they need a lot of money to remain relevant?
"Yes. Let me give you an instance. I had a show here in Lagos, I was in Dubai. They made a mistake and booked my flight for Monday and the show was on Sunday. We rushed to the airport, they said no that my ticket was for the next day. After much pleading and explaining that I had a show that night in Lagos, they said alright.
I could board but not business class since it wasn't my flight. I had to fly economy class with my business class ticket. Sitting down there, people around where staring at me like what am I doing here. A woman even walked up to me and said "Iyanya, you no suppose dey here now, na the other side you suppose dey". What came to my mind next was that I can't just decide to fly economy today, it will become gist. I have to work hard, I have to make money, to live up to your expectations. It's not like am living my life for you but its the life I chose. So, I have to do it".

health

Research has shown that women who engage in muscle-strengthening exercises such as weight lifting and yoga are at a lower risk of becoming diabetic.
This findings come from a study which followed 100,000 women for 8 years. The study was carried out by scientists from Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Southern Denmark.
The research showed that the chance of developing type 2 diabetes was cut by between 30 and 40 per cent with just three and a half hours of exercise a week. Meanwhile, just an hour's workout every seven days can cut the risk by 13 per cent and muscle-strengthening exercises such as weight lifting and yoga also fend off the condition.
Women who engaged in at least 150 minutes a week of aerobic activity and at least an hour a week of muscle-strengthening activities had the most substantial risk reduction compared with inactive women. They cut their odds of developing type 2 diabetes by a third.
According to Dr Richard Elliott, research communications officer at Diabetes UK, "despite limitations to which this research can be applied to women in general, it underlines the message that leading an active healthy lifestyle can help to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes."
